Although I never like to "segregate" fiction--like mysteries,etc.--I like
them browsing thru--BUT I really feel there needs to be a bridge between
picture books and "fat fiction chapter books." So,my picture books are in
those underwindow type shelving. Above those,on the window sill are "I
CAN READ" books. I once heard a librarian discuss first graders who run
in and say "I CAN READ" now what can they read?? Supposedly that is why
Harper-Collins began calling Little Bear etc I CAN READ. Anyway, it made
a good story to tell my K-!'s as they begin to read. Also It has a
positive sound--and my ESL parents know what's for them and their kids.
I've found they really don't appreciate the lovely picture books and
crave that "Seuss" type stuff for their children. The good news is that
these are almost "by size"--Little Bear, Bonsall,Seuss,so this area looks
neat even after every day's "paw thru"!
