The Charlemae Hill Rollins Colloquium was initiated by the School of Library and Information Sciences of North Carolina Central University in 1980 and is dedicated to improving library services to all children. Mrs. Rollins received international recognition as an author and librarian in her crusade against stereotypical characterization of African American children in books for youth. She served as Children's Librarian of the George Cleveland Hall branch of the Chicago Public Library for over thirty years, and in 1989 the Charlemae Hill Rollins Children's Room was dedicated in her honor. Her most well-known book, "Christmas Gif'," originally published in 1963, was recently reissued with new illustrations by Ashley Bryan in 1993.
