I'm sure your question is going to start up a good discussion! And we'll all find out we hve been re-inventing the wheel... So here is what I do... YMMV We are using Follett Unison. I barcode each box, and write BC on floppies, CDs, Manuals, etc) In MARC I do a VERY SHORT cataloging. Just the Title, Publisher, Material Description, system requirements, # of users and Call number.. For the Call number prefix I put COMP. then for the CN I put either the teacher's name, the grade (we have multi teams), or School. It depends on how the purchase and users was set up. The tech coordinator keeps a database with license information, teachers have list of what is SUPPOSSED to be on their machine. End of the year we will go wipe off illegals.. This is not perfect (by any means) but got the pile off my desk and gives us accountability...
