My definition of fantasy, in the broad sense, includes _Mouse and  the
Motorcycle_ and others with anthropormorphic animals, but in my mind,
fantasy is more other-worldly, time travel, imaginary species, etc.  The
following are my personal favorites along that line:
anything by Madeline L'Engle especially the _Wrinkle in Time_ quartet
Susan Cooper's _Dark is Rising_ series
???? Velde's _Dragon's Bait_
Anne McCaffery's _Dragonsinger_ series
Patricia Wrede's _Calling on Dragons_ et al in series
anything by William Sleator
C. S. Lewis's _Chronicles of Narnia_ series
