Vacation is over, but if you still have some time to read, I recommend
Patchwork, by Karen Osborn.  This first novel chronicles the lives of
three generations of a family (mostly the women) from a South Carolina
mill town.  The setting is so well depicted the reader can see the cotton
fibers in the air and hear the incessant noise of the looms.  Most of the
characters are not educated, but their hopes and dreams and life
challenges are universal.
