The book: Gung Hay Fat Choy by Judy Behrens: Summary-Explains the significance of Chinese New Year & describes its celebration by Chinese Americans. (ISBN:0-516-08842-4; Children's Press of Chicago) The goodie source: Gail Qi, Far East Gifts; P.O. Box 855; Idyllwild, CA 92549. Call Gail for prices at (909)659-5066. She has sources for the red paper, good luck scrolls and all manner of neato little gift goodies. She has been 'warned' you are ready! Gail explains that the tradition is to put a small amount of money (any kind--even a dime) and a gift in red paper to bring luck and fortune all year round. I imagine you could also use that ubiquitous cheap red construction paper schools are so fond of, or perhaps origami paper, or leftover Christmas tissue. Chrysanthamums are big too. My guests are going to learn to make them from the traditional tissue style we used to make for weddings in the 60's. (Fold like a fan, tie with bread ties, unfold and pinking shears the edges.) Gift suggestions ranged from paper lanterns & fans to ginger candy, tiny Buddha statues, or whatever the budget will bear. Happy celebrating to y'all. Karen Visel, Idyllwild, CA
