An excellent book for symbolism written by a follower of Freud is Bruno Bettelheim's book on folk tales_The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales_. He discusses many familiar tales and certainly the symbolism discussed carries over to many other genres of literature.
