Target: Image archives??

I've been asked to locate a repository of images, particularly of
American Writers or "historical personages".  My English department
would like to be able to send a list to this Archive and have them
send back photos of all the requested people (with appropriate
copyright clearances for reproduction into a locally mastered CDROM
database of images).  Is there such a place?  I imagine we're not the only ones
who would benefit from such a service.  Let me know if you know of
any such service or site.
