Top 50 books in world lit...

A teacher has come to me with a question to pose to this group.  His
brother will be living abroad for a year and wants to spend the time away
from his family reading books considered the top 50 in world lit...that
have been translated into English, of course.  I think that he is looking
for books both classics and current ones that should become classics.   What
books would you put on this list of 50?
