This past spring, I posted a request on LM_Net for help with a Newbery
survey. Some 2,211 sixth grade students, sixth grade teachers, and library
media specialists from 45 schools participated.

I'=92ve written an article on the results that hopefully will be published =
in
the fall, but I wanted to give you a quick summary now. Thanks to all of y=
ou
who participated.

Each participant was asked to name his/her favorite Newbery book. Many
people wrote that they could not pick just one title, which is a great
response. The Newbery Award books reflect a variety of genres. There is n=
o
reason why we should all like the same books. Generally speaking, boys,
girls, and adults select different Newbery titles as their favorites.

For boys, the top three favorite Newbery books are: (1) Maniac Magee, (2)
Shiloh, and (3) The Giver.

For girls, the top three favorite Newbery books are: (1) Number the Stars,
(2) Island of the Blue Dolphins, and (3) Shiloh.

For adults, the top three favorite Newbery books are: (1) The Giver, (2)
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, and (3) Bridge to Terabithia.=20

When I tallied all of the participants'=92 votes--students, teachers, libra=
ry
media specialists--the top five favorite Newbery books were: (1) The Giver,
(2) Shiloh, (3) Number the Stars, (4) Island of the Blue Dolphins, and (5)
Maniac Magee.

Again, the article will go into more detail. Thank you all for your kind
help!

Sincerely,
