Well, to be professional, is to know what to do to improve the service to the clients not to just show what you have. Just many school heads and senior teachers have wrong concept of the work of the teacher-librarians. They think we just have to manage the in and outs of the materials and those are simple jobs! >Just another thought along the same line.... Last year the >reading/language arts teachers of the district met twice a month after >school in my library. As I puttered around shelving and such, I listened >to their discussions. One main theme was repeated over and over -- that >of having a professional portfolio. The point was, portfolios are the >"in" thing for demonstrating a student's work, so teachers should keep a >professional portfolio of their work/accomplishments, etc. The statement >was made that if you were applying for a job, a higher position, even for >the annual performance review, this was most necessary. > >Since I was applying for a transfer, I panicked and asked one of the >teachers to guide me in what to put in, what order, etc. It was >instructive, stressful, but worth it. I never got asked for my portfolio >during the interviews, but I had it with me. (Kind of felt like Linus >with his blanket...) Now that I am in my new position/school, I pull out >my portfolio very frequently to retrieve something that will be of use to >a teacher, In flipping to the needed item, they catch glimpses of my >philosophy statment, awards, letters relating to various committee >assignments, etc. not to mention samples of the various things I have >done from bookmarks to designing a daily planner for the students, and >they are impressed. It's helped establish creditability both as an >organized person but as a doer and a resource for the teachers. > >Kaaren Linton kaaren.linton@m.k12.ut.us > > *************************************************************************** All my contact of "hkein.ie.cuhk.hk" with change to "hkein.school.net.hk" effective NOW.
