I solved the problem of not having "time" to do backups by blocking out the last hour on Friday afternoons. My aide & I use this time to run a weekly backup, shelve books, & straighten up/dust the library. It has really done a lot towards preserving our peace of mind. I learned the necessity of having backups when I was hired for this position. They had not had a regular librarian since September (just a sub 2 days/week & a full-time aide who was doing everything else!), the LMC had just been broken into & the entire computer system stolen, & NO BACK-UPS WERE EVER DONE! Faced with all of this (it was February) they quickly hired the first warm body (me!) to apply. Oh, might I add that the card catalog had probably *never* been updated & the library was built in 1946? Just try to imagine the chaos. I'd only had 3 LS courses, & in my naivity dove right in. It took me till the end of my 2nd year to get everything fully straight (& the card catalog will never be done!) The moral of this story is: What they teach you in computer classes is true. ALWAYS BACK UP EVERYTHING! Don't think it can't/won't happen to you. Maybe it won't, but just think for a minute if it does..... ****************************************************** * Debbie Collier Orange Grove Elementary * * Librarian & Houston, Texas * * "Resourceress" COLLIE@TENET.EDU * ******************************************************
