I do a fairytale unit each year with my first graders.

I read several different versions of simple fairy and folk tales (I use 3
billy goats Gruff, 3 Little Pigs and  Goldilocks) and then have the children
divide into groups and make paper bag puppets of the characters and present
puppet shows to the rest of the class.  We don't use a script, the children
practice oral telling of the stories with their group.  It is their most
favorite activity of the year!
