Thanks to all of you who responded to my problem regarding the over long Book Fair dilemma. Thought I would let you know how it is going to turn out. First of all, I have made it perfectly clear to her, this week and over the last year, that I do not want the library closed for more than a week at the most. This is one of my top priorities, partially because the teachers and principals at all the schools in the district want it this way. Also of course because I believe that is best, too. We do not have the staff to run Book fair and regular class schedule at the same time so we close for a minimum number of days. I did let the principal know what is going on and he is supportive of the shorter time. So it will be five days only. Someone asked why the PTA didn't do the fair: they used to help and then they kept the profits and we had to ask for the money, and to compete with other school interests for it. Over time, their contributions of time and physical help dwindled, but they still controlled the money. So, we just stopped asking for their help and now have complete control over how the money is spent (for author visits, and materials for all students to use--it all goes back to the kids). The school may or may not qualify for the computer. You all helped me by validating my gut feeling that this was not the crucial issue here. It's too bad if they don't, but it's not like they don't have computers in the library anyway. It would be a nice benefit but not worth closing for so long. The aide is unhappy with me right now. But, it's not the first time and probably won't be the last. We have a tenuous working relationship, I do try to keep it on a positive note, but things like this crop up now and then. She is retiring sometime in the next 12 months and I'm trying to keep the library moving in a positive direction in the meantime. She has a lot of GOOD qualities and does many excellent things. I hate this waiting game, but I've realized she is only going to change a certain amount at this stage. Again, thank you. This is the not first time you have helped me resolve an issue and I really appreciate your support and ideas. I can't imagine doing my job without all of you anymore!
