To: Fellow school librarians, often overwhelmed by the size and scope of LM_NET: Here are a few suggestions I have found work well for controlling the vast LM_NET list! I use Eudora and a Mac, but I am sure the ideas would work on other programs and PC's as well. First make a Mailbox for LM_NET list and put a folder in for "Administration" which includes how to stop and start mail, sign on and sign off, set digest, using keywords etc. Make other folders for whatever you think worth saving. Second, subscribe for digest. This way you can delete great gobs of stuff in one fell swoop when you are just too busy to look at anything, and your mailbox is loaded. Highlight several at a time and hit the delete button! Grit your teeth if you have to, for all those unread messages. Believe me, you'll live through it and be happier! Third, if you subscribe to the digest and when you have the time to briefly look at the messages, you can simply scan the subject headings. Using the down arrow, you can guestimate just about where the message is you want to read. Read it and delete the whole thing, OR (here's the good part): **If you want to save the message you just read (but obviously not the whole digest), copy and paste that one message to a "New Message" to yourself. From that message you can print and delete, or print and send JUST THAT ONE message to yourself! Or you can transfer it to that mailbox you just set up. In fact you can keep copying and pasting those single messages into the one that you are sending to yourself, or printing, or transferring to a mailbox. I have also tried cutting and pasting to the notepad, and that works fine, but I think the above is even better because you can keep a copy if you want, and you don't have to go out to a different program. You can combine messages and print all at once, etc. TRY IT, YOU MAY LIKE IT. ****************************************************************************** Linda Wood Library Media Specialist CHECK OUT RHODE ISLAND'S South Kingstown High School SCHOOL LIBRARY HOME PAGE: 215 Columbia Street Http://ride.ri.net/RIEMA/home.htmp Wakefield, RI 02879 401/792-9611 **************************************************************************** **
