Linda, Great. I find that students do a much better job of selecting a book when they come independently to the library. When they are with their entire class there are more behavior problems. By themselves they will ask for a book about a particular subject and I have a perfect opportunity to show them how to use the automated card catalog. For 2nd and 3rd graders usually once is enough because it was at the point of need and they remember. As for skills, they should be planned cooperatively with the teacher so that anything done in the library is an introduction to or extension or practice of what is happening in the classroom. I have an aide part of the day so I can plan a session with the teacher and their is no interuption to students coming at will to check out books. I am glad when another school adopts flexible scheduling. For too long libraries have been used for teacher breaks etc. No educucational value .
