A few years ago my husband (not a librarian) was afflicted with this
problem. The Dr. gave him an exercise to prevent the problem
in the future. ..It is VERY simple. Locate a strong rubber band
in a size that will fit over the fingers of your hand (about at
the joint between the nail and the middle joint of the finger).
Place on fingers, then spread fingers and then relax the fingers.
The band places resistance so that the tendons (or ligaments)
further down in the arm towards the elbow are exercised. Do
this several times a day for 6-8 weeks or longer if you like.
He had one cortisone shot, did the exercises and has not had
the proble reoccur.
