We too have a surplus of book covers and they do perk up an older library considerably. We use them so that the kids know what new books are in. Our kids are generally too young to use the look up but they certainly can look at the covers and ask for a particular book. They very quickly learn to check our new book section first and then ask for help if the book is not there. Our kids like shiny but they also like new...almost anything new will do. Also the few we have with mylar covers generally are mangled. You should see what they did to a brand new paper back copy of Officer Buckle. Two kindergartners and that book was ready for the trash. No matter how much we work on taking care of the books some of those smaller kids are ROUGH on them. Mylar covers would be a new way for them to carry the books around - I have visions of them folding the covers back and suspending the book from the mylar jacket. Perhaps we need to enlist parents and teach them how to teach their children to treat books?? This is why we use our covers for more decorative purposes. THey would last about two check outs on those books. Maybe next year when we add grades 3-5 we can get more mylar covers, and they will last.
