Talk about "rough" youngsters, let me tell you a true story. This very
dear lady, who is *very* conscientious about everthing she does, checks
out different kinds of music from her public library. She has been doing
this a long time, and back when records were the main circulation item
besides books, she did that regularly. If she really liked an album, she
would go buy a personal copy.

Anyway, one day she had her arms full and many errands to run, so to free
her hand to open her car door, she laid the record to be returned on top
of the car. She hopped in and drove off her merry way, running errands.

Several days later, she realized she didn't remember returning the
record, so she went to the library to check to see if it was there and
she just forgot that she returned it. Yes, it was there but it had been
overdue and the cover had tire tracks on it. The ladies in the library
said they had wondered what had happened to it, but the record itself was
o.k.

They all surmised that the lady had driven off with the record on top of
the car, it blew off, and cars ran over it. Some kind soul picked it up
and returned it to the public library. Fortunately, the pavement or
driveway was smooth were it landed or the record would have been crushed.

Needless to say, the lady was mortified and offered to buy a new one. You
just never know what some of our materials experience. (I had a school
secretary borrow a book once who fell asleep sunning herself in the back
yard -- this was back before we were all warned about the dangers of sun.
Her dog got her book and she said when she woke up, there wasn't enough
left of that book to even bring the pieces in -- not even parts of the
cover!)
