We are a K-2 school with scheduled classes. Grades 1 and 2 come for 40
minutes. The first part is our story or lesson, followed by independent
checkout. I usually try to have an activity during free time, usually
art-based, relating to what we did that day. My question is, does anyone
have a good idea for some other, more general "task" or activity students
this age could do independently after checkout, for those times when you
don't have an "assigned" activity? Preferably something that doesn't have
to be photocopied and use so much paper every week. I have many board
games, puzzles, puppets, manipulatives, and that type thing, but some
students get tired of those, plus some students need more structure and
direction than that. I thought that maybe I could have them work on a
reading log or a research booklet for 2nd grade. Have any of you had
success with similar things? I am sure many media specialists could use
the results of this query, so I'll be sure to post.
Thanks a bunch!
