I read with interest the new job/first week thread. (Labor Day
weekend, first time I have had a chance to turn on my home computer.) I
only wish my problems were so small.
As many of you in the Kansas City area know, my brand new school was
flooded when the incoming water main separated the Sat. night, 8/24, after
we had opened school on the previous Wed. The pipe was located in an area
across from the LMC. I know other librarians have suffered worse
nightmares, so don't think I am feeling sorry for myself. But, it will be a
several weeks before I get "our" books into the hands of students. The
books are now being freeze-dried in Ft. Worth, TX. I must say a big "thank
you" to my two paras; without Claudia and Kathy, I don't think I would have
managed so easily.
I must say the damage was minimalized by the excellent disaster
response team that the Blue Valley district has in place. Other longer term
response teams have been brought in by the various insurance companies
involved, and I know of only one space (not in the LMC) that actually had
mildew.
By the way, NOW would be a good time to see if your district has
disaster response plans.
To update anyone interested, the data wiring will be redone before
we can restart any of our computers. The furniture company will be in on
Tue. (I hope), and they and the carpet tile people will finish pulling up
the carpet tiles from the steel panel false floor. We have already pulled
up some steel panels and dried out the underneath concrete subfloor.
Once those two things are done, I plan to start borrowing from other
buildings as students need materials to get us by until our books come back.
I hope to plan with our PTO a "welcome back" party for our books.
WHAT A START TO A NEW JOB/FIRST WEEK!
        A good year to everyone!
