This is an OLD hit ( I don't think it ever got posted). Figured it would
be a good time of year to post it (or maybe re-post it).
I had asked for recommendations of books to "guide" me in my first year
as a media specialist. BTW, I just finished my first year, and am
starting my second year tomorrow!

I just received a preview copy from Libraries Unlimited of "So You're
Going to Run a Library: A Library management Primer" by Dave Sutton. I
have just glanced through it and it is aimed at the beginning librarian -
of any library. I thought it was a pretty good starting point - reminded
you of the whole picture. It's $22.50 in pg.

Anyways, I found *School Library Resource Book, Tips and Techniques to
Improve Educational Effectiveness* by marilyn Richardson and Wendy West
(1995) very useful and up-to-date. Good luck in your new position!

I found TEACHING LIBRARY SKILLS IN GRADES K THROUGH 6 to be
helpful. Author is Roach and Moore. ISBN 1-55570-126-4
The publisher is Neal-Schuman, New York (1993 publlication
date)
Features I liked: gives objectives for each grade level on
a page that can be duplicated for your administration. I can
circle the lesson objective, fill in the "hows" and give to my
principal. The objectives are what has been chosed by Dallas
Public Schools as learning standards per grade level.....I purchased
this last year (my first year as a librarian) but would find it
helpful at any school district.

The first 2 that came to my mind are pretty old and probably out of print:
_Steps to Service_ by Mildred L. Nickel, ALA, 1986.
_Elementary School Librarian's Almanac_ by Weisburg and Toor, Center for
Applied Research in Education.
A more recent one which sounds good, although I haven't seen it, is:
School Library Management, 3rd ed. Catherine Andronik, ed., Linworth
Publishing, 1994.
Good luck! Have a good year.

Some resources that may be useful for practical, daily procedures and
managment:
Running a School Media Center by Stein and Brown. ISBN 1555701000.

Hi there! I'm in the same wonderful boat as you - I was just hired
as the k-5 media specialist for 2 schools. I found some useful material
from Linworth Press. I bought their "School Library Management Notebook",
"Skills for Life: Library Information Literacy for Gr. k-6", "Tips and
Other Bright Ideas for School Librarians", "Internet for Library Media
Specialists" (by Carol Mann Simpson) and "Computers & Technology in School
Library Media Centers". Linworth Press' toll free number is

... One of the best pieces of advice my library school advisor
gave me was that my number one goal during this first year is to simply
survive!
Good luck!

_The Elementary School Librarian's Survival Guide_
by Barbara Farley Bannister and Janice B. Carlile is
a wonderful, PRACTICAL resource for new librarians.
It is published by the Center for Applied Research in
Education, West Nyack, New York 10995. Good luck.
