I don't remembr who asked about this, and I think I suggested a different
set of key combinations. However--->

The correct steps to take are:
Start up while holding down Option-Apple-P-R keys.

Try it three times [hold down the keys till you hear the tone 3 times] then
let the machine start up as usual.

I have found that all is well, then.  If you get asked about rebuilding the
desktop, choose yes.
