Message to TECH: Windows 3.1 / Windows 95 Security In response to Pam Roy's (LMS, Branford High School) request for information on setting up security for Windows 95, I thought the following may help: Windows 3.1: Security can be set in the Restrictions section of the PROGMAN.INI file: - NoRun=1 disables the Run command under the File menu. - EditLevel=3 will prevent the user from creating, deleting or changing programs in the program group. These 2 settings used in conjuction, prevent the user from running any application not already in a program group. It will not prevent a user from running something if it still exists in a program group. Windows 95: The Policies package can be used to set security. This package is not included in a standard Windows 95 installation and must be specifically installed from the Windows 95 CD. For information on this package, please consult the helpfile on the Windows 95 CD: Admin\reskit\helpfile\win95rk.hlp. Russell McGrath Softlink Australia Pty Ltd rus@softlink.com.au
