Hi Group-- I just want to thank all of you that responded to my request for illustrated classics. Below are the responses: We have a few. The publisher (pb) is Baronet Books. NY,NY which appears to be a subdivision of Playmore, Inc., Publishers and Waldman Publishing Corp. There is a series put out by Baronet Books, New York called Great Illustrated Classics. I had 5 & 6th graders clamoring for these. There is an illustration on every other page. These are adaptations of the original version such as Treasure Island, Black Beauty, The Time Machine, etc. I have seen these in book stores and even toy stores. They are great for reluctant readers. They have a little bigger print, also. Hope this helps. Waldenbooks (book store) sells classics with illustrations. This summer they were having a promotion and I believe they were only $2.99 per book. I went and looked at them but I was looking for comic book classics. Scribner Children's Books used to have some wonderful illustrated classics, illustrated by N.C. Wyeth. I'd suggest contacting them to get a list -- Scribner was bought out by Macmillan some time ago, and Macmillan has recently been swallowed up by Simon & Schuster, so contact Simon & Schuster. My contact there is Elena Blanco and her phone number is 212-698-2804 or e-mail her at Elena_M_Blanco@prenhall.com. I purchased a set from Raintree Steck-Vaughn called Short Classics. They are for ages 9-17, reading level is grade 4, there are 48 pages per book and there are 28 books in the series. Some of the titles include: The Canterbury Tales, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pride and Prejudice, A Tale of Two Cities, etc. They are not really in a comic book format. There will be a page or two of the story and then an illustration. They sell for $16.98 each or $475.44 for the set. They can be purchased from: Raintree Steck-Vaughn Publishers P.O. Box 26015 Austin, TX 78755 1800-531-5015 1512343-6854 FAX You can order card catalog kits as well as bar coding. If you haven't already got these, you might try: Classics Illustrated series - published by First Publishing, Inc., New York - distributed by Berkely Publishing Group - most of the ones we have have copyrights in the early 1990's - nicely illustrated "graphic novels," although most are only 45-50 p. long We have had great success with _Great Illustrated Classics_ published by Baronet Books (Playmore Inc., Publishers & Waldman Publishing Corp., New York). In fact, I had trouble finding one on the shelf to get the publishers name. if you have an ESL catalog file, they can usually be found in there. I think Permabound also has a section in their catalogs on them, if you want rebounds. I have the Great Illustrated Classics in my library and the kids really like them. Ours were purchased at Waldenbooks. They are hardback and have held up really well. I think the cost was between two and five dollars each. publisher's name. -- Joan Sawyer jsawyer@scnc.lsd.k12.mi.us Otto Middle School Media Specialist
