I've sat quiet for the past week while this discussion has taken place. I
will now come clean. I read Sweet Valley High. And Nancy Drew. Even some
Bobsey Twins. It's true. Do you know what I have on my nightstand right
now? Dickens--Great Expectations. It can happen-it happened to me because
1: My mother took me to the library every week since I was in the womb
2: I read crap, got bored, and moved onto greener pastures.
I am now studying to be a librarian, so that literature did me no harm.
And I'll admit to reading some Jackie Collins every once in awhile even
now--it's entertainment. It doesn't strain the brain. After a hard week,
all you want to do sometimes is relax.
If a child is reading "bad" books, so what? They may turn out alright--I
did. Also, a person who reads young will keep reading throughout their
adult lives, becoming enriched and using their brain cells in some
capacity. I'd prefer my kid to read a book, even if it isn't the highest
of quality, than to be out making trouble and possibly getting into
trouble.
Just a thought.
