Coming to the Texas Library Association's annual conference next week and
looking for storytelling?  The Storytelling Interest Group (soon to be
Round Table) of TLA is sponsoring or co-sponsoring the following programs
on storytelling.


Preconference program:
CREATING STORIES FROM LIFE/BRINGING LIFE TO STORIES
                Tuesday, April 8
                            9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon and
                        1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. (two sessions)
This two-part preconference explores the art, craft, and journey of
storytelling as creation and performance. In the first session, author and
performer C.J. Critt demonstrates how personal experiences can be crafted
into stories - and how this process can be used to help patrons tell their
own stories. In the afternoon, author and storyteller Angela Shelf Medearis
introduces participants to the basic performance tools of the oral
storytelling tradition, with special attention to structuring library story
sessions and unlocking their potential as reading incentives. Participants
may register for one or both sessions. C.J. Critt, author/performance

Conference program:

                         STORYTELLING ROUND-UP
                Tuesday, April 8
                              7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
  Share stories, skills, and suggestions with your colleagues or just
listen and enjoy this year's story swap. This open mike-styled evening
could be your audition for the 1998 Storytelling Concert!  Business meeting
precedes program. Jim Maroon & Phyllis Tucker,  presiding.


A TASTE OF TEXAS TELLERS: A STORYTELLING SAMPLER
                Wednesday, April 9
                              9:00 a.m. - 10:50 a.m.
Start your day with a stellar smorgasbord from Texas storytellers. This
performance program offers an opportunity to sample storytellers' wares and
identify potential presentations for the library. Tom McDermott, presiding.


THE TALES THAT BIND: SOUTHWEST STORYTELLING
                      AND THE LIBRARY COMMUNITY
                Thursday, April 10
                              2:00 p.m. - 3:50 p.m.
 Author and storyteller Joe Hayes, a 1997-98 Texas Bluebonnet Award
nominee, shares stories of  the multicultural Southwest. Hayes reveals
secrets for using successful storytelling to build awareness of cultural
diversity in the library community. Joe Hayes, author and storyteller,
Cinco Puntos Press. Sue Penny, presiding.


THE STORYTELLING CONCERT: AN EVENING WITH AMERICA'S BEST
                Thursday, April 10
                             8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
  Leading tellers from Texas and abroad spin yarns and define excellence in
the oral tradition. This evening of entertainment also offers real-life
examples of how to make storytelling work in your library programs. Emmy
Alvarez, librarian/storyteller; Nancy Burks, storyteller/ventriloquist,
Nana Puddin' Productions; Bill Harley, uthor/storyteller, August House; Jim
Weiss, storyteller, Great Hall Productions. Jim Maroon & Finley Stewart,
presiding.
