In response to my query concerning the Ft.Collins flood and the impact on libraries and whether any school libraries were affected I received these replies. Thank you to the Colorado people who responded and to those people who wrote to ask for more information. There is an organization of school librarians called Colorado Educational Media Association (CEMA, pronounced see-muh) which has a web page at http://www.aclin.org/code/cema and there is a Colorado Library Association which is part of the Colorado Department of Education at 201 E. Colfax Ave-Room 309, Denver CO 80203, phone (303) 866-6676. So far the mess at CSU is all I've heard, also. Very kind of you to think of others. -- Diane Freeman, Librarian Arvada West High School phone (303)982-1287 11325 W. As I understand it, the flooding was rather localized in the town. One trailer court was destroyed. The only library I have heard that received damage is the Colorado State University library. The library was being renovated when the flooding occurred. In fact, the renovation was just about completed. Throughout the library there were work people, cables, drills, etc while I was on campus. In the flood (according to TV news reports) the lower part of the library had 4 feet of standing water for a period of time. Apparently, part of an exterior wall caved in, allowing the water to rush into the library. There must have been LOTS of water standing against the library wall. The university president described plans to "dehydrate" the materials in the library. He hopes to save a majority of the materials damaged by the water. I believe old records (100 year old newspapers, etc) were stored on the lower level. The school book store lost all materials. They will have to be replaced. In September I will meet with my professor to continue my course work. If you are interested I will be happy to relay what information I receive from him. The nearest school (as far as I know) was not touched by the flooding. In fact, it was the place of shelter for those homeless trailer park families for a short while.
