From: Vicky-Quackenbush -LKL <Vicky-Quackenbush_-LKL@Internet.fwsd.wednet.edu> We do two things at our school that cost next to nothing. When students reach a particular level their name goes up on the Wall of Fame. They are called Star Readers and one of our teachers puts their name on a star that is taped to the Wall with our other Star Readers. Those kids also got to have an overnight at the school. We spent money for food and prizes, but I know other schools that have had overnights without spending a lot of money. The kids in our school love read-a-thons and the teachers have them in their classrooms to award classroom acheivement. Our overnight started out to be an all day read-a-thon in the library, which would have been cost free. We went kind of crazy in the details! ----------------------------------------- From: mfink@tctc.com - We have used principal for a day - the student makes the daily announcements (under the guidance of the principal), etc. - Lunch with the principal ------------------------------------------ From: Marcia Millere <stonycrk@rose.net> Last night my Psych professor at VSU suggested having Bubble Gum Fridays in the classrooms for behavior reward. The idea would be that it must stay in the room and if they brag to the other kids, they lose it. I'm thinking of having an AR Cafe next year, where once a month high point earners could eat with me, either a special area in the cafeteria or (if I'm brave/stupid enough) in the MC. ----------------------------------------- From: Christine Talbert <talbert@erols.com> I don't know whether your kids will enjoy this, but mine sure did!! How about lunch with the librarian (media specialist). They really thought they were special! (which tthey are!) ---------------------------------------- From: Debbie Ann Boyer <debann@tenet.edu> We base the incentives on number of points earned and 85% accuracy on all tests taken. Some of these are: 1/2 day to spend in the library (don't have to make up missed work), full day in the library, extra recess with another class, sit anywhere you choose at lunch, free read time, free homework pass, free 100 paper, teacher for the day, librarian for the day, principal for the day ( my son has done this 2 years in a row for earning 500 points each year. It was fun for him and the entire school.), eat lunch with the teacher, eat lunch with the principal make the morning announcements, sit anywhere you choose in the classroom for a day, allowed to check out more than the allowed number of library books, put name on the AR Wall of Fame, Announce names when they earn 50 or 100 points, and parents can come read a book to the class. Class Goals can be set. When these are reached: extra recess, watch a movie, take a field trip to the park, eat lunch in the room, eat lunch outside, have game day -- everyone brings games to play, have a library party -- this was very successful. Parents helped decorate, parents read, teachers and principals came in to read, snacks were served by parents, etc., field trip to a bookstore or public library, and an all day read -- we do this twice a year -------------------------------------------- *************************************************************************** Pat Pickard, Coordinator Phone: (404) 325-3011 Ex.236 Dept. of Educational Media FAX: (404) 728-1977 DeKalb County Schools 2415-C N.
