Actually, Carolyn, in the scheme of things, it is really great to have all
the books in exact order.

But after I have written lesson plans, taught 30 classes each week,
answered lots of questions, talked to parents, fixed the VCR, replaced a
lightbulb in an overhead, given directions on the binding machine,
laminated, typed a purchase order, fended off slaesmen who don't understand
how to make an appointment, attended various meetings, and on and on and
on, the LAST thing I have time for is shelving books in alphabetical order.

I have a part time aide, and she is busy checking in books, checking out
books, answering questions when I'm busy, and adding books to the
collection. I do not think her time is well spent shelving books in exact
order.

My easy books are color coded, which make shelving a breeze. And yes, all
the M's are mixed up, but sometimes when we browse theu the M's looking for
Brwon Bear, Brown Bear, we find other things that are interesting, too. I
am also able to give a third grader a pile of books and say, match the
color and shelve these books, and it can be done quickly.

This method also keeps me from getting crazy with kids who can't remember
exactly where a book belongs. I don't want to be the book shelf police!
As long as it is in the right color we can find it!

Some things you just have to let go of.

Hope this helps!
