At my Elementary position, I found it was very useful to run a June get the books back contest for each grade level. The first class at each grade level got a "frozen treat" party, second place got suckers, and third place got a cracker-jack prize (don't ask please, I don't know where the previous LMS got them, they were OLD.) At my present position, 6-12, I inherited a system in which detentions are assigned after a grace period and are continued until the book is returned or paid for. We had only ONE outstanding book at the end of 95-96 and NONE this year. Of course, names are announced on the PA to make this possible, but their privacy was protected because we didn't announce the books. Humor: One day the gal that does announcements noticed that the teachers outnumbered the students, and announced them too! I got a lot of books back that day, but felt I had to appologise & tell them that it wouldn't happen on a regular basis. Mrs. Jeanette B.
