Subject: Gen: AOL mentor needed.

Last Spring during our Spring Library Convention, my School Cadre met to plan
their goals for the coming school year. When I returned from the convention,
I inquired as to whether or not there was anything I needed to know and was
told no. So imagine my surprise when I picked up a copy of the 97-98 Action
plan in my school mailbox Friday and found that I am going to be in charge of
writing a new Math Curriculum for our school for K-5, one grade level to be
completed each month starting in October. I'm not sure why we are doing this
since the district is paying stipends for a district level curriculum
framework and subsequent instructional strategies and activities, but I guess
we think we need our own.

I'm also not sure why I get to do Math as I have less background knowledge
there than in any other subject, but oh well--that's the danger of missing
committee meetings.

Anyway I will be searching the Internet for some examples, but meanwhile I
would appreciate your letting me know if you are aware of a particularly good
site to try or if your school has done this, would you be willing to share.

We did Reading last year and had to redo it several times before the
principal approved it. She wants things very specific and measurable as in
"85 % of each kindergarten class will be able to identify all lower case
letters of the alphabet, when presented out of sequence as assessed by
teacher quarterly testing at the end of third quarter."

We had to take out anything hard to measure such as understands left to right
progression on the printed page or chooses and enjoys a variety of materials
for independent reading.

So that is the kind of math curriculum I will be looking for. Hope you can
help. Please reply to the E-mail address listed below.

Colleagues,

I dropped from the list when my district changed providers and no longer
provided a dialup from home account. But I missed it so much that I made the
mistake of paying AOL for two years in advance when they offered their now
infamous unlimited usage rate.

After 3 months of NEVER getting on, I finally got over my disgust and signed
up for the listserv this summer. Now I know AOL is supposed to be very easy
to use and that it has tutorials, but still I bet some of you have been
around long enough to know the easiest fastest way to get things done. I
would love it if a few of you AOL pro's would volunteer to let me ask you my
questions and then after this, I won't have to address them to the whole
group.

I am using a MAC Performa 575 with a 28,800 modem. Although I don't get a
busy signal so much now, I still get kicked off almost every time I'm online
and often my computer crashes in the process.

Because of that I download my mail before I read it, but then it appears
alphabetically, and I would prefer to read the messages in the sequence they
were posted. Is there anyway around that? Would getting the mail as a
digest help? The other thing I specifically would like advise on is the
easiest way to save postings I want to print or keep. I had thought I would
cut and paste them into ClarisWorks but my 12 meg of Ram won't let me have
both AOL and ClarisWorks open at the same time even offline. Is there a
better way?

Now that you know the kind of questions I ask, I'll stop with those two for
now and hope to hear from you.
