As you begin the new school year, think ahead to the December 4th
deadline for the 1998 ICONnect Mini-Grants offered by the American
Association of School Librarians.  Complete application guidelines
are listed below.  For more information about the mini-grants and all
components of AASL's ICONnect technology initiative, visit the

Collaborative teams of school library media specialists and classroom
teachers can apply for an ICONnect mini-grant of $1000 to be used
toward the purchase of technology for use in the library media center
or to support travel for the team to attend a state or national
conference. ***The school library media specialist applying for the
mini-grant must be a member of ALA/AASL.***

A subcommittee of AASL's ICONnect Task Force will review the
applications and determine the grantees. Mini-grants will be awarded
based on creativity, clarity, completeness, and the effective use of
Internet resources to develop the unit. The unit must demonstrate
collaborative activities between the library media specialist(s) and
classroom teacher(s), and the Internet resources used must be
meaningful to the curriculum unit.

To apply for an ICONnect mini-grant, follow the instructions below.
Mail one (1) original and seven (7) copies of the application to:

***All applications must be received in the AASL Office by Thursday,
December 4, 1997. Electronic submissions will not be accepted.***

The recipients of the grants will be announced during the American
Library Association's 1998 Midwinter Meeting, January 9-15 in New
Orleans. Recipients do not have to be present to win. A synopsis of
the winning units will be posted on the ICONnect Web Page, and
printed in AASL's newsletter.

ICONnect Mini-Grant Application Instructions:

***All applications must be no more than three typed pages (excluding
student
   examples)***

* Write a description of the curriculum unit including: abstract (not
to
   exceed 100 words); objectives; content area(s); collaborative
planning
   process; grade level(s); size of student group(s); date(s) and
duration of
   unit; outcomes for students; and assessment.

* List the Internet resources, how to access them (FTP, Telnet, Web
site,
   etc.), and any other resources used (print, CD-ROMs, databases,
etc.)

* Include a written example of student end products showing
   completeness of unit. Do not include more than two (2) examples.
No
   disks or videos allowed.

* Describe in one or two paragraphs the technology that you plan to
   purchase for the library media center OR what conference the
library
   media specialist and teacher(s) plan to attend.

* Criteria on how the mini-grants are judged is posted on the AASL
   ICONnect web site at: http://www.ala.org/ICONN/minicriteria.html.

* The grant must not exceed three, double-spaced, typed pages;
excluding
   student examples. No materials will be returned to the applicant.
