As for the almanac, the World Almanac co. has a great program with
blackline masters, an introdutrory video, and 15 softcover almanacs for
$100. They have an 800# (I don't have it here at home,but 800 directory
is free). WA will ship almost immediately - but with the UPS strike it
might take a little longer.
Hope this helps.

What's the curriculum? Base it on somethng they are doing or going to
do. I like to have the students look up a country or state they are
going to do a report about and write to them using the chamber of
commerce or the embassy. The information they glean can be used in
the report or presentation.

The sixth grade at our school does a report on foreign countries. We
do the request for info early enough in the year so the info comes by
the time they need it. I have them use postcards and use the school
and teacher as the return address. If this sounds good to you and you
have any questions, don't heitate to ask!

I did a "Treasure Hunt" with my 6th graders. I went through
the almanac and pulled out interesting information - Levi's corporate
headquarters, Woody Allen's birthday, etc. Then I formulated questions so
that each student had 5 to answer. Before they got their questions, we
went over how the index works in an almanac and we discussed alternative
ways of searching (celebrity birthday, notable personalities, etc.) The
kids had fun with the class. Hope this helps!

I've done almanac lessons with fifth graders, but this should work
just as well with sixth. Obviously you have to do some pre-teaching,
going over the two indexes, doing some joint searching. The most
difficult thing my students found was the size ofthe print. A
culminating activity would be for the children to find the day of the
week that they were born in and then find different information about
events in the year they were born in: who won the super bowl, who was
president, most popular song (having that record would be fun just find
out in advance what years you're dealing with) - you get the idea.
This personalizes the learning experience and draws many that were
previously disinterested in. Good luck.

Try putting the students in teams and having them search for the answers
to trivia questions using the almanacs (you won't need a class set this
