Group: I have finally gotten a new MAC 6500/250 for the library after 4 years of stagnation. I plan to use this machine for demonstrating software with my classes or to the staff, for multimedia projects (after I learn how), just a bit with my own account for Internet access (Our networked PC's have a much faster connection than I can get with my 28.8 modem but they are stuck in the old pre frames, no sound no video no frames netscape mode, and there are some sites I want the kids to be able to see with all the glitter and glitz). and finally to let students run some of the newer CD's that don't run well or at all on our old MAC's. Staff-wise we have gone from everyone being afraid to touch the computers to a number of people who are pretty irresponsible in their computer use. I tend to think of it as mainly a library computer as it took me a loong time to earn the money and a long time to set it up to work the way I want it to. I don't want it abused the way the other computers sometimes are. I would like to put a security system on the computer that will (1) force people to save items on a disk or at least in a folder of my choice rather than anywhere it happens to end up. (2) Not allow applications to be moved or renamed (3) Protect the system folder (4) Allow me to put a password on some programs so that they cannot be accessed at all without my knowledge. I am concerned with both students and staff as we have had some pretty annoying things happen in the past at odd hours of the night and early in the morning (and no one would admit to having even touched the computer) . I would maybe even like to restrict access to the hard drive entirely during the hours when the library is supposedly closed. We have used Foolproof on our other MAC's (all pre Power-MAC). It worked ok until I installed System 7.5 and then no longer worked at all. I may just need a new version of this program but I would like to here from the rest of you with any recommendations you have have. This is a stand alone computer not one on a network, but it would be very difficult and time consuming to actually move it every night to a more secure place due to the number of cables that would have to be hooked and unhooked each time. It is on a cart but not one that was meant to be moved very far or very fast.
