Dear Fellow LM_NETTERS:
Last week I posted a request for sources for books on tape. My
principal has a long ride to work everyday and he was looking for a
place to borrow books on tape. Of course I wanted to score some
points with him, so I told him I'd try to find out. Books on tape must
be really hot. I got about 50 responses on my request. Thanks to all
those who responded to my request. I'm sure my principal will be
impressed. Many requested that I post a "hit" so here it is:

Of course, the local Public library was suggested by many as a source
for getting books on tape. Many people said their libraries were a
great had a good selection or they could get BOT through interlibrary
loan.

Cracker Barrel Restaurant was suggested as a ource for getting Books
on tape. I guess they let you borrow them for a small fee and return
them to other Cracker Barrel Restuarants. Unfornately, I don't
believe we have Cracker Barrel Restaurants in our area.

Here's some specific responses:

Books on Tape
P.O. Box 7900
Newport Beach, CA
Customer Service: 800-252-6996

They have an extremely wide selection and the tapes are of good
quality.
You can keep the books a month, which can be helpful with really long
ones. There is a big catalog, as well as a monthly newsletter,
featuring
new releases and "bargain books." There is a fee for each book, plus
mailing,
but I feel it is a real bargain. In fact, I'm addicted to listening!

Have your principal call 1-800-638-1304, or write to:

Recorded Books, Inc.,
270 Skpjack Rd.
Prince Frederick, MD 20678

for a free catalog of unabridged audio books. I got this info off the
back
cover of a Recorded Books, Inc. tape I am currently borrowing from the
public library. The back cover also states "Ask about our easy
rentals by
mail." Also mention to your principal that tapes are readily
available
from the public libraries, and with inter-library loan, he can get
just
about any tape!

Have you tried your regional public library? Blockbuster video also
has
a books on tape section now, though I don't know the loaning periods.

Naturally, the best, least expensive source is the public library. If
I
were you, I would swing by and check out the one closest to his home,
so
you can tell him what is there. I live in a very small town in the
flatlands of Ohio, but even my public library has a healthy selection
--
which I take advantage of when traveling.

Commercially, there is a company called Blackstone that both rents and
sells books on tape. I do not have their current catalog (they send
them
frequently), but they may be on the Web -- worth giving
www.Blackstone.com a try.

I'm sure someone will mention Recorded Books, but I thought I'd tell
you
that a fellow staff member recently told me that RB has a web sight
where
you can directly order tapes for rental. I don't know the URL, but I'm
sure you could find it easily. It might be an opportunity to
demonstrate
some of your technology to your principal, or demonstrate the need for
what you don't have.

Most public libraries loan books on tape. Also, in our area, the
Wherehouse
(Records, Videos, etc.) rents BOT for reasonable fee.

Sue:
We rent books on tape from our Schnucks grocery story's video
department.
Do your video stores handle books on tape? Public Library?
Good luck

I understand that the Cracker Barrel restaurants have current books on
tape for $3.00. Also, what about the library system?

In any case, Recorded books offers a rental program. I don't
know
what price cut there is for schools. We purchase from them at the
public library. Call 1-800-638-1304. These are our favorite books on
tape producers.

Sue, there is a company out of Michigan, I think, that produces Books
on
Tape. Their toll-free number is 1-888-829-7867. This number is
toll-free.

Hi Sue...the BEST recorded books can be found at 1-800-638-1304,
Recorded
Books, Inc., located in my area of Prince Frederick, MD. The actors
are
supurb; all "books" are unabridged. Library Journal did a feature on
audiobooks, and one of my favorite Recorded Books readers was on the
cover
of the issue. Let me know how you make out!
