GEN: Canadian author?

A teacher is requesting a picture book he purchased as a gift in
Toronto about 10 years ago.  His daughter lost the book and he wants to
locate another copy, but he can't remember the title or author.
It is a picture book about growing up on a farm in Manitoba.  The
illustrations were spectacular.

The author was male, lived in Toronto at the time of his death, and was in
his forties or early fifties when he died.

Can anyone recognize this story?
