I wanted to see if any of you are in the same situation. I have a friend in a Pre-5 school who is in a new situation. In the state where she works the media specialists are mandated to have flexible schedule/open library. However, this year the friend was told that she was not only going to be over the library, but over the computer lab too (the school system let computer lab aides go at the end of the 1996-97 school year). She has a set schedule beginning at 8:15am and lasting til 2:15pm. Each class lasts 50 minutes. At one point in this 50 min. class she will keep half the class and the other half will go with the library aide to the computer lab. At one point they will switch groups. There are no breaks between classes. One class comes in as the other leaves. She has one 50 minute break a day. During this time she eats lunch and on Fridays she gets no lunch since she does lunch duty. Each week the groups rotate. For instance, the classes that came on Monday this week will come on Thursday next week. The group that came on Tuesday this week will come on Monday next week. The classes that come on Monday will get to come back again on Friday. All of this so that the teacher's can have planning time. They already have planning time from Art, Music and PE. If any of you are in a similar situation, I would appreciate you letting me know how you deal with this and I will pass along to her. She had a team meeting today and her teachers were not very understanding on why she couldn't pull materials like she has done in the past (She asked when was she supposed to have time to do it?!); Why couldn't they send groups of students to the library unsupervised? ; etc., etc. They suggested she get a parent volunteer to check out, file books, etc. She used the example that she was supposed to have had a parent helper today...but no show...
