Thanks to everyone that responded. Think I got replies from half the states in the union! ***************************************************** ****************************************************** My media assistants are all volunteers. They check the books/magazines in & out. They shelve books (each student is responsible for a certain section), they laminate materials for teachers (we have an old-style flat laminator), they stamp new books, they cover books that need plastic covers, they decorate the library (hang the seasonal banners, change bulliten boards, etc.). They do all the little things that take so much time. We have a 7 period day and I try to get one or two every hour (more than that & it becomes too social). Since I don't have an aide, the volunteers are very valuable to me! Linda Hill ****************************************************** My student aides perform the usual tasks: checking books in and out, manning the copy machine, shelving books, reading shelves that are assigned to them, assisting students with the computers as needed, retrieving periodicals from the stacks as needed (and re-filing them), etc. In addition, I have=20 developed a computer program specifically for library student aides which issues a wide variety of reference questions that they are to answer, giving the source of the answer as well as the answer. The questions are designed to acquaint students with both print and electronic resources. Students are required to answer correctly 15 questions per quarter. =20 Norma Dreyer ****************************************************** Arrange displays and bulletin boards =09 Back up computer files =09 Check materials in and out =09 Collate and staple worksheets =09 Deliver materials to classrooms and school office =09 Enter information into a computer database =09 File catalogs =09 Get mail and sort =09 Help in book processing: Paste on bar codes, date-due slips and labels;=20 stamp school name; put on mylar jackets =09 Inventory with hand-held computer device =09 Keep paper slips and pencils available at various locations =09 Answer phone =09 Process inter-library loan materials =09 Proof World-Wide Web addresses =09 Proofreading =09 Read paperback racks =09 Read shelves so items are in correct order =09 Read video tapes. =09 Recommend titles =09 Shelve materials =09 Sort magazines in magazine room =09 Train other students in using computers and locating materials =09 Troubleshoot CD-ROMs =09 Typing =09 Water plants =09 Zealously publicize the library=D5s services Patricia Moore, Media Specialist North Polk=20 ****************************************************** Our student aides do: Shelving Maintain shelf order of a select part of the collection Straighten up the library floor Laminate Copy videotapes Deliver A-V equipment Assist students with library use Check out materials Run errands Put newspapers on poles Manage the network printer Stamp new books, add date dues Answer the telephone Dust Check in new magazines Some, not all assist with computer work Linda Elliot ****************************************************** shelf read shelf books help deliver a-v equipment man our pass desk help process magazines help w/bulletin boards ****************************************************** Besides checking out/in ans reshelving materials, some of the other jobs I assign my student aides to do are: -- process new magazines by placing a label (book spine label) on the upper left hand corner of each magazine and write the date/issue on the label; then security stripped (I use the 3M Tattle Tape) to theft-proof it. -- process new books and av materials received from our District Library Services by checking bar code labels, putting protective=20 tape over the bar codes, checking book spine labels, also tape those with protective tape so they don't fall off the book spine. We also use place security strip in books and av items. -- read shelves to put books in order. -- replace worn spine labels. -- book repair. -- type order form for books that I am sending to the bindery. -- dusting/wiping shelves and tables clean. -- cleaning books (erasure, whiting-out writing, etc.) -- bonding book jacket/front cover to books with plain cover to make=20 them more appealing. -- manage printing from the network laser printer, collect money if due. (I give the first three printed (text) pages free; after that=20 5 cents per page for text, 10 cents for each graphic page) -- run errands between the library and the offices and classrooms. -- process materials being discarded by stamping the "discard" stamp on them, and blacking out the library/school stamps to dissociate those materials from the school/school district. -- help others locate books on shelves -- help others with catalog search on computer. -- I trained and called the ones more capable with computer technology my 'tech aides' and assigned them to help others with their computer needs. -- update the magazine archive.=20 Fay Yao They check in magazines (tape & stamp & write dates on front), put the newspapers out on display sticks, tidy the library, clean monitor screens, dust the shelves, watch the desk (get magazines from the magazine rooms, give out rulers, markers, loan pens, staplers, etc.) so we can get other things done around the library, take mail, boxes, etc. to the office, deliver notes around the building, help process books (put in covers, mark date, source info, etc), put up and take down posters, empty the display windows, help put up displays, read shelves, help shelve books, and other tasks too numerous to think of right now. We have several student aides each day, and we try to select certain students for certain jobs---not all do all jobs. Some are just better at certain things than others, and frankly some aren't much good at anything but keeping an eye on the desk. =20 Kathy Schaub For the first time this year, I feel that I am someone who can answer this question. The reason is that God gave me a broken leg so that I would learn to ask others to help me--and it has worked. My student assistants have done all of the following this year: Done my "running" for me. I sit at my desk and go through the mail or other materials; as I decide where something belongs, I hand it to an assistant, tell her where it goes & what to do with it. She does that, then returns to my desk for the next small job. Written up a list of the career materials in our career center. Typed up the list of career materials. Taken the digital camera out to get "start of school" pictures from all around the building, and then with a little training, enhanced and cropped the pictures using the computer. Prepared simple web pages to display the pictures. Delivered equipment to teachers. Photocopied materials for me. Run to the office for every little thing I need. Done any heavy lifting that needed to be done. Sorted my computer disks into "alphabetical" order to make it easier for me to later sort them into utilities, program installation disks, data disks, etc. Cleaned tables and other surfaces. Designed and edited several web pages (the one assistant who is an HTML pro) Checked books out and in. Shelved books. Hooked up the VCR's for my distance learning classroom (correctly the first time! KIDS!) '? :::::::::::::l (please pardon the previous characters; they are a comment from my cat, Sami, who just stepped on the keyboard).=20 Moved furniture. Hunted for things I could not find (they were not very successful at this). Put replacement bulbs in projectors. Used a three-hole punch to prepare materials for my students in the Satellite classroom. Designed and put up my bulletin boards.
