Thanks to all of you who took time from your busy schedules to offer suggestions for helping third graders, reading below grade level, to select appropriate books. By far, the majority of people practice the "5 finger method," where children read a page and hold up/down a finger for every missed word. If a child reaches "5," the book is too hard, and it is recommended that the child choose another one, at least for the time being. Other suggestions included booktalking beginner books, and easy series, marking easier books with stickers, having teachers assist with checkout, and conducting a book pass activity. Looking forward to sharing these great ideas with my young readers.
