Hi all,
I'm catching up on my e-mail over the holidays and noticed this
discussion (from the animal discussion) and could not resist adding my 2
cents:
On a comical side note -- I also had people share stories of how
>certain volunteers had decided to rearrange sections by book size, and even
>by book color. That makes for a pretty library collection, however, not a
>practically organized one!! Well, again, thanks to everyone who offered me
>advice, sympathy or a funny story!!!

I use these examples of how books are shelved as ways books were shelved
prior to Dewey in the intro to Dewey talk I give to second graders. I start
out describing their current LMC as all organized according to the author
of the book, then they go to the next school's LMC and find out that the
books are organized according to color, then they go to the next school and
find out the books are organized according to size, meanwhile they go to
the city library and find the books are organized according to title of the
book. My question after each example is how do they find a book on snakes?
There are two choices: search all the shelves one by one or ask the
librarian. Then, I say that Mr. Dewey "thought this was crazy." So he
decided to create a system...
It's amazing how quick the kids are to grasp that organizing the
libraries in these fashions mean that the book cannot be found easily.
  Have a good holiday season.
