AskAsia=AE invites classrooms to participate in a free online field trip
through

Vietnam while following the progress of the Vietnam Challenge cycling
event

On January 1, 1998, a team of 75 individuals, including American and
Vietnamese veterans of the war in Vietnam, some with disabilities, will
embark on the Vietnam Challenge, a 1,200-mile, 16-day bicycle journey
of discovery through the heart of Vietnam. Leading the team will be
three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond and Diana Nyad, holder of
the world's record for the longest swim. Joining them--via
cyberspace--will be thousands of schoolchildren and their teachers who
will follow the groundbreaking journey via the Asia Society's AskAsia
(http://www.askasia.org), a Web site dedicated to providing quality
K-12 resources on Asia. The immediacy and interactivity of the Web will
allow classrooms to communicate with Challenge team members (American
and Vietnamese), exchange ideas, explore Vietnam's diverse landscape
and learn about contemporary Vietnam.

"The connection between the Vietnam Challenge and AskAsia can offer
students, at all grade levels, an opportunity to acquire a greater
understanding of Vietnam. AskAsia provides a window of insight into the
history and after-effects of world-changing events, such as the war in
Vietnam, while giving students relevant information about the rich
history and the vitality of Vietnam," said Namji Steinemann, Director
of the Education Department at the Asia Society, America's preeminent
nonprofit organization linking the peoples of Asia and the United
States.=20

As part of the Challenge event, the Asia Society and World T.E.A.M.
Sports are presenting a "Vietnam in Your Classroom" contest to
recognize teachers who demonstrate creative approaches to integrating
the study of Vietnam and the Vietnam Challenge into the classroom.
Other contests include submission of Vietnam-related lesson plans that
integrate the Challenge event into the classroom for a top prize of
$1,000, and a student contest for a chance to win a Vietnam Challenge
bike. In addition, educators who register to participate in the
Vietnam Challenge educational exchange will receive a free Classroom
Poster supporting teaching about Vietnam.=20
