Mac online connection - answers

You people are unbelievable! I wrote to UK_Schools and to LM_NET and the
message was also passed on to the Mac Supporters group. Within 24 hours I
received 25 knowledgeable and detailed replies to my problem with getting
my Mac 5400 to get Netscape online. There were also many others who have
had the same problem!

I was asked to post a HIT so here are the edited highlights.

THE PROBLEM:
"I have a 5400 with internal modem. I'm running System 7.5.3, ConfigPPP,
Mac Internet connection kit, Netscape versions 2.02 or 3.0 or 3.01 (I've
tried them all)
The problem seems to lie not with getting a dialup connection out but with
connecting with Netscape".

ANSWERS IN SUMMARY:
A summary would be :use FreePPP instead of MacPPP; use Open Transport v
1.1.2; you might as well also get Geoport / Express Modem Updater v3; check
MacTCP using the advice below about a clean install (see answer 4).
If that doesn't work you've at least got a few more ideas to keep your mind
off trashing your Mac. So this is computing for the rest of us!
