Have you seen Sam and the tigers? I loved it- Spectacular illustration and
the modernization of story was great. Reading it in conjunction with "The
story of little Babaji" was great with kids. I did it with k-3. They all were
intrigued. Noone had known the original Little Black Sambo which I thought
was also interesting.(Though the adults who saw it knew the original)
Also book for Newbery that blew me away was Belle Prater's boy by Ruth White.
I heard her speak and was not impressed and it took me a while to read it ,
but Wow1
I do hope Newbery picks one appropriate to elelemtary. So often it is a
middle or jr high book.
