Have you seen Sam and the tigers? I loved it- Spectacular illustration and the modernization of story was great. Reading it in conjunction with "The story of little Babaji" was great with kids. I did it with k-3. They all were intrigued. Noone had known the original Little Black Sambo which I thought was also interesting.(Though the adults who saw it knew the original) Also book for Newbery that blew me away was Belle Prater's boy by Ruth White. I heard her speak and was not impressed and it took me a while to read it , but Wow1 I do hope Newbery picks one appropriate to elelemtary. So often it is a middle or jr high book. FMcE
