Just received the following from my friends at Turner. Thought some of you
might be interested
in it. This looks like an excellent opportunity to get math teachers
involved in distance
learning (something I have had a difficult time in doing, it seams like
there is not much
distance learning for math teachers).

Joe

Students "Travel" to Spring Training for Real-Life Lessons Through
Baseball
When was the last time a teacher sent a student home to learn physics by
watching John
Smoltz pitch a curve ball? Or assigned reading Baseball Hall of Famer
Jackie Robinson's
biography to understand the civil rights movement? Or even asked students
to study a box score
of a baseball game to understand statistics?
On February 26 and 27, thousands of students across the nation will learn
these concepts
about science, math, history and economics, and more-via America's pastime-
through a live,
interactive broadcast from the Atlanta Braves Spring Training Camp in West
Palm Beach,
Florida, called "Calculations On a Curve Ball: The Many Figures of
Baseball." Calculations on
a Curve Ball is the twelfth trip in a series of electronic field trips
called Turner Adventure
Learning; a series designed for students to interact with experts and learn
about distant places
without ever leaving the classroom, showing them the relevance between the
classroom and
the real world.
In cooperation with the Atlanta Braves and the National Baseball Hall of
Fame and
Museum, Calculations on a Curve Ball will teach students that baseball
truly is a game rich in
history and numbers. In this two-day broadcast, students will study
mathematical and
scientific applications in baseball, as well as the business of this sport
and its role as a
reflection of American culture. During day one of the broadcast, students
will learn the
geographical history of baseball, study the physics behind hitting,
throwing and fielding and
use these concepts to improve their own game, determine how the geometrical
layout of a
baseball field affects the game, and meet the players themselves to gain
insight into the game.
In day two's show, students will use mathematical equations to calculate
percentages of runs,
hits and errors of their favorite players, study the history of baseball
and its parallels to the
20th Century, and learn the economic principals of baseball by talking with
owners, managers
and front office staff who help students determine what makes a winning team.
Educators can enroll in TURNER ADVENTURE LEARNING electronic field trips
for free and receive a
year's taping rights to the programs. TESI also offers the opportunity to
purchase a TAL Learning Kit for
$149, which contains elements essential to making the electronic field trip
come to life. The Learning Kit
contains an hour-long preview program for teachers and students, data disks
with primary and secondary
resources, and passwords for special Internet online forums with experts
on-site and in the field before,
during and after the live event. Unlimited taping rights accompany the
purchase of the
comprehensive Learning Kit which connects the field trip to classroom
curriculum. Teachers
interested in learning more about TURNER ADVENTURE LEARNING and enrollment
procedures may call 1-800-639-7797.
Turner Educational Services, Inc., the educational arm of Turner
Broadcasting, is
committed to enhancing education by making selected resources of Turner
Broadcasting
available to schools nationwide, in Canada and abroad.
The Atlanta Braves, Major League Baseball's winningest team on the field in
the 1990's,
have a long-standing relationship and commitment off the field in the
community that will
continue into the 1997 season.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is a not-for-profit educational
institution dedicated to fostering an appreciation of the historical
development of baseball and
its impact on our culture by collecting, preserving, exhibiting and
interpreting its collection for a
global audience as well as honoring those who have made outstanding
contributions to our
National Pastime. For more information on the National Baseball Hall of
Fame and Museum
educational programs, contact the Hall of Fame's education coordinator at
