Sorry to be so long in putting this together. Here's the recommendations I
received:
I subscribe to the two magazines requested by our Spanish department:
Selecciones (which is Readers Digest in Spanish, somewhat smaller than
the English version) and Geomundo (sort of a travel magazine about
Spanish speaking locales around the world from what I can gather, but I
actually have spent VERY little time looking at it). Honestly, they do
not get used, but neither is very expensive. I keep the current year in
the LMC and give the prior year to the Spanish department each January,
so perhaps they are more used once they're in the classrooms.  Beats me;
if that keeps them happy, I'll buy them. Good luck.

Try Geomundo.

I just started subscribing to Latina for my Spanish teacher. The first
issue has come - it's something like Seventeen in Spanish. There's also
Hispanic. I'm sure both are under $30, but I don't remember the exact
prices - I'm at home too. If you need more info, email me at
Elaine Woods ewoods@servtech.com.

Our foreign language department subscribes to two Spanish language
periodicals: one which is abbreviated Americas/Spanish on my sheet which
costs $38.00 annually, the other called Buen Hogar which runs $59.90
annually. BTW, I know what you mean about expensive. They also
subscribe to a French magazine called Paris Match which costs $149.00
annually! From: Roberta Meyer <rmeyer@isbe.state.il.us>

We have a mag called: "Tu" that we really like. Let me know if you want
more info. It is available from EBSCO. From: aastorga@ursuline.org (Alicia

We like Hispanic, $12, 12 issues, $18, 24 issues. 800-251-2688.
Call and tell them you want a trial issue; I think they'll send you one
to evaluate and then you can cancel the invoice if you don't want it.

you might try Mas. I believe
it's similar to People magazine. There is also Latina, which is sort of
like Cosmopolitan, and Geomundo, which is like National Geographic.

Hispanic -- similar to People in format
Geomundo -- similar to National Geographic; beautiful photographs
Selectiones del Readers Digest -- Spanish version of Readers Digest;
unfortunately (or fortunately) doesn't follow the same month's selections
as the English version

Call Scholastic (800) 807-2466. They publish 3 magazines for students in
Spanish, 3 in German, and 4 in French. Beginning level of Spanish
magazine is called Que Tal, level 2 is Ahora, level 3 is El Sol. They
will send free examination copies. Que Tal is $28.80 per year.

Jeanette- Readers Digest in Spanish is in the $25 range. I just
started getting a teen magazine called Tu, from Revista Tu, Subscription
Service Dept., PO Box 37253, Boone, IA 50037-0253. The one year
subscription was $20.95, using a 30% special offer.

I have always ordered Mexico Desconocido. EBSCO carries it.
It is like National Geographic Traveler. Has short articles with color
photos about significant places in Mexico-feature articles on Guanajuato,
Chiapas, etc: as well as some stories about important historical people,
Sor Juana, Benito Juarez. There is always a story about an historical
site, how to get there, what to see, where to stay, etc.

The level of diction is also excellent. I am an intermediate level reader
of Spanish, and I can usually understand these articles. As I recall this
magazine runs about $55/year.

We subscibe to Geomundo and Vanidades. Vanidades is primarily of interest
to girls- kind of like Vogue. We are going to try Eres in 1997 which
seems to have articles for both sexes.

The Miami, Florida, Spanish language newspaper El Herald has a new website
at <http://www.elherald.com> . Try it out to see if it could fill the
teacher's needs- it's updated every day and includes graphics.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a Spanish teacher. I subscribe to the following magazines:
_Eres_ ( a teen magazine with gossip about singers, movie and soap
stars, fashion, music, surveys, articles about teen life, etc.) From
Mexico) Published semi monthly. Annual subscription rate is $29.95
Editorial Televisa, 6355 N. W. 36th Street, Virginia Garden FL 33166
_Deporte Internacional_ same address as above. $39.95
Finally, I suggest checking out the web for other magazines:
http://www.mundolatino.org/prensa has a good list of magazines
from all over the Spanish speaking world, including El proceso from
Mexico and Carretas from Peru.
I far prefer using authentic materials with my students to the
"canned" Scholastic stuff.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeanette, we get "Eros" and "Tu", "Chicos" & one other, and the _Miami
Herald_. Some of these come through our EBSCO jobber. Others are direct.
From: Locusb@aol.com
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Try "Eres". I get it from EBSCO and it's like Teen except in Spanish and
has both a male and female readership. I can't remember the price. I'm at
home :-)
