I agree that the uniformity is really a good thing.  To get around the
terms that are not common for the kids AND the un-kid-like thinking
(What kid thinks U.S. -- History -- Civil War --  and so on?), I remind
the kids that the most effective way to search the computerized catalog
is by key word.  Then, if they type in Civil War, they will get where
they want much faster and get more information since that search lets
them search not only the subject, but also the title and the summary,
too.
