TECH: Web Page Problem

This is a technical problem which I hope someone has encountered or may be
able to help me with - I am learning how to create web pages and when
transferring text and images from Notepad to the Internet Explorer screen,
everything transfers except graphics.  Bold letters transfer, italics,
background color - everything but the gif files which, I guess, contain
the image I want.  Instead of an image, I get a small white box with a red
x in the center.  This does NOT happen with Netscape, just Internet
Explorer.  I don't particularly want to download Netscape and eliminate
Internet  Explorer but may have to unless someone has an easier solution.
