Here's my big chance to influence a decision being considered by the
Department of Education and I need your input.

I was a guest reader at F.B. Leon Guerrero Middle School today. For part of
the time, I was sitting next to and visting with Evelyn Salas, the head of
teacher recruitment for DoE. Apparently DoE is considering changing the
name of the school librarians to School Media Specialists. She asked my
opinion.

The reason: The title "librarian" doesn't connote all the changes in the
library these days.

My response: I don't believe that is true since we librarians are being
trained in the area of computers, etc., these days. I told her I would do
some research in to it for her and get back right away. Now I know there
was some heavy duty discussion about this last year and do not want to open
that can again.

My question:

Is there any significant difference in the training received by a Librarian
and a School Media Specialist? To me, a specialist is something more
confining than a librarian. I know my alma mater offered both degrees. I
want to check my info. If you could answer this question, what would you
say??? Can you give me brief definitions??
