chatrooms

Hello Friends!
        My 2 sons, ages 13 and 17 are interested in chat rooms.  I really
know nothing about these, except I've heard that you can "get in over your
head" or whatever.  What experiences have you had with these?  What should
we be watchful for?  Where can you find them on the Internet?  Any comments
are appreciated--please email me directly.  Thanks!
